Breast Feeding Derby Grrrl!

Art imitates Life? Well, in Roller Grrrls case we were hoping to hold back this image (and plot) till nearer the launch and then today we saw this article about a roller derby team player breast feeding her child at a bout (outwith actual play, of course!)

You can read the short article here: http://bluemilk.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/when-roller-derby-girls-breastfeed/

The Lil Rollers!

The Lil Rollers character sketches by the very talented Abby Ryder. Wonderful energy shown with these girls. Imagine the Powerpuff Girls with skates on and high on E numbers? Now crank that up to ELEVEN!!!

Character sketch!

Another character sketch. Playful figure with some differing tattoo designs. Original pose based on my Harley Quinn sketch at a recent convention in Lille.

Action panel!

Zebra and Lead jammer!

Sin Bin!

Mouse in the Sin Bin. Poor Mouse... but you should have seen the Other Grrrl! Mouse takes a penalty break for... well, that would be telling. You'll just have to wait and see when that episode appears!

Zebras... in the Wild! Another character sketch based on various people I see around the derby scene. Details are added and personalities are created. Names though... now they're difficult. But you know that already? ;)

New image!

Pivot and Jammer. A more relaxed pose (between bouts) Again, no toe-stops. This detail more than any always seems to spark the most debate. What's your choice? With... or without?

Roller Grrrls cover!

The LIDL Beer Run episode from the Grrrls On The Road storyline. You'll have to wait till release to see what happens next. Imagine the Italian Job with trolleys instead of Minis and cases of beer instead of gold. There's shenanigans with night security, chases done the aisles of a store and a couple of guard dogs subdued with Frankfurters.

More news on Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter. Use our hub at http://www.rollergrrrls.com/ to track the Grrrls down!

Banners - The shopping trolley image!

Work in Progress! Colour flats for our new banner. Still needs a shading pass and correction and a tartan skirt but you get the idea. The original banner has our Born To Skate helmet image (seen on the http://www.rollergrrrls.com/ hub) Please see previous post or just look below this one!

Banners - Born to Skate!

The original banner. Born To Skate!

Roller Grrrls on picnic!

A small captured moment. Cora and Emma have a picnic with Charlie.

Nadja. Our Russian Foreign exchange student!

Nadja. Our foreign exchange student from Russia. Helps to translate between Cora and Beta (our respective German and Italian girls on the team) We won't be supplying subtitles. You'll just have to go with the overly frantic hand gestures and face pulling of the girls to understand! ;)

Three of our referees. Just don't even think of fouling! These girls are fair but tough. Consider your ass in the Sin Bin if you even look at them the wrong way!

MCs_The Dynamic Duo!

Our Merchant City Roller Derby two MCs. Any similarity between persons living, dead, undead, pure dead brilliant or gallus is entirely coincidental, your honor.

Eerie Erin_Jammer

Another character piece. The calm before the storm. Eerie Erin is the main jammer; a fast, aggressive and downright hardcore player. Make sure you have your gum shield in place when she's making her way through the pack.

En Vacances - Airport (possibly CDG)

The Roller Grrrls continue their tour and arrive by plane in CDG (or another airport if legal issues pursue!) Passport Control offers a wonderful opportunity for some fun with authority. Watch out for the tasers though!

The LIDL Incident.

The Roller Grrrls go on tour in Europe. Midway through the Italian leg of the journey, the girls' VW camper van gets robbed and they lose their month's beer allowance (a lot of cans) In desperation they find a local LIDL and do a small raid on the liquor shelves.

Imagine The Italian Job with shopping trolleys instead of Minis and crates of beer instead of gold bars! And, yes... we will work in the famous 'Bloody doors off!' line somehow.

Cover - Pencils.

After the previous post interest (sketches) I decided to put up some of the pencil versions of the covers here. These are raw scans and will be tweaked to correct proportions, skew and other details.

The cover designs hint at troubles ahead for some of the Roller Grrrls but also includes more upbeat adventures too.

Comments welcome.

Cover sketches.

I have posted up a selection of cover sketches on the Facebook site here.

Normally these are done very fast with biro, marker or grey brushpen. The best plan is to get the ideas down on the page as quickly as possible and then work them up later (adding details and other elements where appropriate) or photo referencing. The shopping trip and VW campervan holiday are going to be favourites but need to recce first.

Lil Rollers - Character sketches!

This is the comic within the comic. Lil Rollers are pint-sized versions of the Roller Grrrls and will feature as an online gag strip (similar to Calvin and Hobbes) keeping the series alive between the Roller Grrrls books. Don't be fooled by their tiny stature. They cuss, fight and drink more than any sailor. A Motley Crue of Mayhem! ;)

Team line-up -part two.

Team line-up - part one.

Anna. Team captain. Kinda Tom Berenger in Platoon. Hard but fair. Actually, no. She's Willem Dafoe.

2nd on team. Fiery temperament and always at logger heads with Anna (captain) Watch the sparks fly on and off the track! A secret past will be revealed. Yes, it's Eastenders on Wheels!

Teal is an Indian student working at the local university. Looking for a challenge and excitement in her life she joins the Roller Grrrls team. She proves to be one of the fastest girls on the track!

Roller Grrrls - First sketches.

Here are a tentative selection of sketches for the characters in Roller Grrrls. The look and inspiration is pure Rollerball. Love that movie. Yes, the numbers are on the front of their shirts (instead of the team logo) but that is a nod to James Cann's Houston team. Need to work up a good design for the home team and then their roller derby names. That;s going to be tough! ;)

Finding a derby name is difficult for most players but to come up with at least ten is going to be a nightmare! Wish me luck?

Special thanks to industry veteran (tee hee!) Gary Erskine for offering the first two images. Another roller derby fan and sometimes colleague/storyboader for the games industry with me. Appreciate the character pics. His Facebook Fanpage can be seen here.

Corporate shenanigans.

Roller derby needs sponsorship. Wouldn't it be great if large corporations like Nike and Coca Cola helped out the sport? What would their campaigns be like, I wonder?

Badges and T-shirt designs.

We've got designs on the merchandise! ;)

Just working up some ideas for badges and T-shirts featuring the Roller Grrrls logo and other derby related stuff. Pop culture references are always fun and we hope to get more soon. Let us know which ones you like? Ideas welcome.

OBVIOUSLY the RG, Nike and Adidas designs will never happen but they are fun logos to play with.

Roller Grrrls!

Welcome to the Roller Grrrls blog. First post. So... here is the helmet pic that started it all. Based on the Full Metal Jacket movie poster with a suitably derby make-over.
